Trading Essence for Skill

Even if you feel you have no chance of accomplishing a task, there is one last hope: Essence, the energy of the universe itself. Every point of Essence spent raises your chances by one point.

Spending Essence to make a roll easier has a special side-effect, always noticeable by even the most casual observer. When energy that celestial manifests so crudely in the corporeal realm, something "otherworldly" occurs. It might be a flash of diabolical flame, the distant ringing of church bells, or the overpowering smell of incense. The GM decides on the effect, but there is inevitably some obvious, strange side-effect that accompanies the expenditure of Essence.

For example: George needs to get past the password on someone's computer. Since he doesn't have the skill Computer Operation, which has a default of -3, and his Intelligence is 6, he has to roll a 3 or lower to succeed! George spends 2 points of Essence to raise his chances of success to 5, and makes his roll. To the observers, it appeared as though his character touched the computer's monitor and for a moment there came the sound of a thousand Cherubim singing in harmony. Then it was gone, and he was through the machine's security.
