November 12, 2017: Illuminated Site of the Week: Pulling The Rug Out From Under HistoryPeople chronicle history – their own and that of the world around them – in hundreds of ways. At the blog Rugs of War, Nigel Lendon and Tim Bonyhady depict and describe numerous mats woven by the people of the Middle East that show events from this unusual perspective. Text is sewn in, sometimes obviously, sometimes cryptically, like fabric-based grace notes. Images, many focused on 9/11 or scenes of war (for probably obvious reasons), give hints to the daily lives or general experiences of the makers. A fascinating peek into not only a creative endeavor but a worldview once or twice removed from those of Westerners and their 24-hour news cycles, Rugs of War shows how history, whether oral or from the end of a needle, can drift and gain new meaning. -- Suggested by RespectableLawyer Share this post! |
