This distinction is a nearly literal sword of Damocles: The Prince of Death
is not immune the occasional fit of clarity in which he wonders if he might
not perhaps be focusing a wee bit too tightly on nothing but simply
killing things. When that happens, he grants this to one of his impudites or
habbalah.
The longest any of them have survived after being thus distincted has been
thirteen days, and that was only because it almost immediately went renegade
and fled in gibbering horror. The Game never broadcast its execution: Having
a traitor thanking you profusely while you inflict painful soul-death spoils
the effect...
This distinction allows its holder to peer into the mind and emotional state
of the Prince of Death, thereby allowing it the insight needed to advise
Saminga on how best to improve himself and his Word. Unfortunately, the
awareness it grants is constant and cannot be switched off. Even the most
devoted servitors of death have difficulty dealing with constant immersion
in the charnel pit that is Saminga's mind for long, although there has been
speculation about this being due to the distinction only having been granted
to his smarter, more perceptive demons. Whether a less-intelligent,
less-perceptive demon would have the fortitude required to withstand holding
this for any length of time is nothing more than a hypothetical concern,
however, as Saminga only gives it to those most capable of being truly
helpful to him, and thus most vulnerable to the madness it brings about.
Whether this actually is due to it being used as a punishment of those
demons spotted trying to hide or flee when they see the light of this
particular clarity in Saminga's various eyes, rather than a reward, is a
matter best left to speculation far outside his hearing.
