September 10, 2014: Battle For The Net

"Slow lanes would change the Internet and free speech forever."

You may have noticed something different about our site today. We added fake load screens and icons as an example of the Internet without net neutrality.

So, what is going on with net neutrality? I can't tell it like John Oliver. But here goes . . .

The FCC is revisiting the net neutrality proposal to allow paid priority for "faster" website loading by Internet Service Providers such as Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon. With this, cable companies can intentionally slow specific websites down to restrict content and charge both us and websites for the content we use every day. Additionally, this leaves smaller startups in the dust, without a way to compete equally online with larger established corporations.

Don't we pay enough for Internet? Do we want to give them our voice, too?

Sites such as Amazon, Etsy, Facebook, Imgur, Mozilla, Netflix, Reddit, Upworthy, and Vimeo support net neutrality, and understand what it means to take it away. We encourage you to support net neutrality by contacting your lawmakers. Find more ways to support at www.battleforthenet.com.

"Protect Internet freedom. Defend net neutrality."
