FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 12, 2002
Austin, TX – Steve Jackson Games was pleased to receive an Origins Award last week at Origins, the national game convention, in Columbus, OH.
The runaway hit card game Munchkin was honored as the Best Traditional Card Game of the year by the gaming public, who voted over the Internet and via traditional mail ballots earlier this year.
"Munchkin has been a huge hit, and this award is the perfect topper to a great first year," game designer Steve Jackson said. Munchkin is a card game that parodies the "loot and grab" tendencies of classic dungeon crawling adventures. Players compete to kill monsters and grab magic items, like the Horny Helmet and the Boots of Butt-Kicking. Wield the Staff of Napalm . . . or maybe the Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment. Start by slaughtering the Potted Plant and the Drooling Slime, and work your way up to the Plutonium Dragon. If you've ever done it in your favorite fantasy roleplaying game, you can make fun of it in Munchkin.
And the Munchkin phenomenon marches onward. Munchkin 2: Unnatural Axe, an expansion for the original card game, is already out, as is a set of metal Munchkin Miniatures and – available only through SJ Games' Warehouse 23 online store – Munchkin T-Shirts. Coming soon is Star Munchkin, a spinoff card game that takes the fun of Munchkin into an outer space setting, and the ultimate crossover: Munchkin d20! These 48-page hardback books convert the outrageous world of Munchkin into the well-known d20 System. The Player's Handbook, Munchkin Master's Guide, and Monster Manual will come out this fall.
