It's been a busy, busy year for miniatures fans. Trinity: Battleground, Dark Heaven: Apocalypse, Crimson Skies . . . every time you turn around, somebody new has put out another miniatures rules system, designed to work with another set of miniatures. Do we really need another one?

Well, need it or not, The Way of War is here. Published by The CaBil (but distributed and sold by Eden Studios) is a recent addition to the fray. Set in "The Way," The Way of War is a "Universal Miniatures System," meaning that it can handle any miniature, any genre, any type, any size.

At least, that's the claim. And it seems to hold up -- The Way of War has rules for everything, or just about everything. And it manages to get it all covered in the first 75 pages or so of the rulebook. Many of the rules are fairly standard, but two ideas caught my eye. Each figure has a "Soldiery" rating, which not only covers the traditional morale functions of staying in formation, not panicking, and the like, but is also used for gliding and flying (for creatures that have that ability), piloting vehicles, and other miscellaneous details that come up.

Combat is broken up into three categories -- Personal, Ranged, and Unnatural. Personal is just another way to say melee or hand-to-hand, of course, and Ranged is obvious. It's the Unnatural category that stands out, because it covers so many different possibilities, . . .
