LucasArts owes me. You see, I recently acquired their latest release, The Dig, and as a result I only managed to work 24 hours or so last week. "Yeah, yeah, it's just another graphic adventure," I hear you say. Well, I thought the same until I started it up and the rest of the "real world" ceased to exist. The combination of excellent graphic detail, a gorgeous musical soundtrack, an interesting plot, and strong, believable characters make The Dig one of the most engaging, fun, and addictive adventures I've ever played.

The Dig takes place in the near future. As the game starts, an observatory has detected a very large asteroid that is on a collision course with the Earth. NASA decides to launch a shuttle with a team of specialists aboard to plant a couple of nukes on the thing. This will hopefully change its course and avert a major global catastrophe.

You play Boston Low, the gruffly pragmatic mission commander. The main members of your landing team are Lutger Brink, a brilliant (but arrogant) geologist and archaeologist who has been studying the asteroid, and Maggie Robbins, the world-famous reporter who will be covering this historic event.

I won't give too much away, but the asteroid turns out to be much more than just a rock. The landing team is spirited away to a distant planet and dropped on the surface with nothing but the space . . .
