Last year's release of the Star Trek: The Next Generation Roleplaying Game (ST:TNG RPG) was a major event for the industry. Not only did it mark the return of the Star Trek roleplaying franchise after nearly a decade of absence, but it arrived just in time to pick up the slack left by the demise of West End's justifiably lauded Star Wars RPG. ST:TNG RPG proved a remarkable success and garnered the Origins Award for Best New Roleplaying Game of 1998. Yet, there remain a sizeable group of Star Trek fans for whom Captain Picard and company are anathema. These diehards will settle for nothing less than a game "where the Klingons are evil, the colors are pure, and the characters are legendary." For them, there is now the Star Trek Roleplaying Game (ST RPG).

The core game book is an attractive hardcover volume that is a real treat for the eyes. Using a bold color scheme, shots of the original Enterprise and crew, along with the familiar opening credit title fonts, it's hard not to be swept back to the late 1960s, when Kirk and company bold went where no man (none of that politically correct "no one" for these guys) had gone before. The 288 glossy pages within maintain this same feel, assisted by color stills from the series and an easy-to-read layout.
