Daily Illuminator Archive for July 2010
July 1, 2010:
Computer-aided cutting is nothing new. Heck, we've even got a laser-powered version here in the office . . .
July 2, 2010:
The guns just make them go really fast." So warned Jake Johannsen, but now you can strafe an entire office with an AK-47 and no one will buy the farm. (Mind, someone will still lose an eye.) . . .
July 3, 2010:
When we first announced the changes in Munchkin
's 19th printing, Czar of All Things Munchkin
Andrew sat down in front of a webcam and chatted via uStream. Not satisfied with abusing him in front of a camera just once, we tricked him into doing it again a couple of weeks later . . .
July 4, 2010:
It's the Fourth of July, and here in the States that means fireworks, cookouts, and gatherings of friends and family. If you're partying, have fun and be safe! . . .
July 6, 2010:
February and March 2010 brought a lot of short, sweet new releases:
Transhuman Space: Teralogos News - 2100, Fourth Quarter
. The first of our free
collections of Transhuman Space
Transhuman Space: Teralogos News - 2101, First Quarter
. . .
July 7, 2010:
Well, not technically "madness," but two reprints have started shipping. Both include the rules updates made in Munchkin
's 19th printing, and Clerical Errors
has full-color cards for the first time!
Munchkin 3 - Clerical Errors
Another 112 cards for the best-selling game of killing monsters and taking their stuff . . .
July 8, 2010:
A common question about Zombie Dice
and Cthulhu Dice
is "How are they selling?" While we don't discuss specific sales numbers, I can answer "Very nicely."
Does this mean more quick, low-priced games with shiny, shiny dice? Maaaaybe! . . .
July 9, 2010:
The Origins crew -- Randy, Ryan, and Will -- returned safely and gave me their reports. Sounds like it was, as usual, a decent show . . .
July 10, 2010:
This weekend is Protospiel, up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. If the name sounds familiar, it might be due to Protospiel South, which our own Jonathan organized a couple months ago . . .
July 11, 2010:
We're working on two app projects right now. Neither one is for sale yet, but both are progressing very nicely . . .
July 12, 2010:
It's Monday, the dreaded start of the week. One bright spot is checking out e23's most recent uploads . . .
July 13, 2010:
Did you enjoy the uStream chats with your Munchkin
Czar? Good: I did. too . . .
July 14, 2010:
had its third-volume revamp in November of 2008, about the only thing that didn't
get an immediate stem-to-stern remodel was its webpage. That's changed! . . .
July 15, 2010:
With Fairy Dust
and Waiting for Santa
(re)released, and Marked for Death
on the horizon, I've been asked whether we think the Munchkin
booster concept is a success. Yes, absolutely! . . .
July 16, 2010:
I'll be in Milwaukee this weekend, admiring the trains at the Great American Train Show and talking to a few people about the train boardgame we've been working on. So if you live in Milwaukee, or nearby, or if YOU are going to the train show . . . please come say hi! . . .
July 17, 2010:
First, some background: On May 28th, we announced the Munchkin Party Night Contest
. The idea was simple: buy something Munchkin
from a brick and mortar retailer in the month of June, and send us the receipt . . .
July 18, 2010:
And April and May 2010 bring us almost to the present! After these releases, everything you hear about should be new
GURPS Psionic Campaigns
by Jason Levine . . .
July 19, 2010:
If you're like me, you've got just about as many years ahead of you as you do behind you. This firmly qualifies me as "middle-aged," and therefore I'm very happy that e23 released GURPS Classic: Middle Ages 1 (Second Edition)
. . .
July 20, 2010:
John from London read the Daily Illuminator report on Protospiel, and wondered if there were any such gatherings near him. "Darned good question!" I said, which is what I usually say when I have no idea of the answer. So I asked Jonathan Leistiko, who organized Protospiel South . . .
July 21, 2010:
Every now and then I hold a day of games at my house. 15 to 20 of us get together and play way too many games, eat snacks, and basically spend ten to twelve hours having a lot of fun. These events are always a blast and it has been far too many months since I last got a group together for all-day gaming . . .
July 22, 2010:
The nominations for the Diana Jones Awards have been announced. In addition to Chaos in the Old World
, and Montsegur 1244
, a website is on the short list: BoardGameGeek . . .
July 23, 2010:
That headline may be more than a little unfair. Suffice it to say, we haven't mentioned the marvel that is the Large Hadron Collider before now, and it's time to rectify that . . .
July 24, 2010:
San Diego Comic Con is pounding down on me as I set out for the second full day of the show, and so far the show is as much fun as I remember it. Yesterday was great with tons of Zombie Dice
and Cthulhu Dice
leaving the booth and going home with gamers and non-stop gaming in room 15A . . .
July 25, 2010:
For years, SJ has insisted that digital books were the future of publishing. He's had a vision of a download store for years, and since e23 launched in 2005, it has become a huge success, with over 3,000 files ready for download -- including over 300 for GURPS
. . .
July 26, 2010:
It has been said that cyberpunk, as a literary genre, is dead -- killed by an advancing technology that was unforeseen by the authors of the movement. But since we live in a world of constant internet connections, uncaring corporations, and global mercenary companies, I'd say "high-tech low life" continues to be a relevant playground for gaming . . .
July 27, 2010:
Reading the playtest reports from Protospiel reminds me that we haven't talked about our pipeline in a while. Technically, we're not accepting outside submissions . . .
July 28, 2010:
I've been reading the Boardgamenews
site almost daily for about three or four years now. It's a great resource -- I especially love the reviews, even when reading one sends me out to buy a game -- and it was a real pleasure to watch as the new site design came into existence over the last few weeks . . .
July 29, 2010:
Fact: Gen Con Indy will be August 4-8, in Indianapolis, IN. Fact: Steve Jackson Games will be there in force, with MIBs running a variety of events in the gaming area, and staffers stationed in the exhibit hall (booth #1321!) . . .
July 30, 2010:
Sure, we're going to Gen Con. But what are we planning on doing there? . . .
