August 31, 2003: If At First You Don't Succeed . . .
A group of us got together today to drive down south a bit to visit the San Antonio Museum of Art – which, among other things, is featuring a Dale Chihuly exhibition. The theory was that we'd go take in the museum, and then drive back and run a playtest session of the Dork Tower game.
Alas. You know what they say about the best-laid plans, and these plans were not the best ones we ever laid. We were a bit late getting on the road . . . and there was a bad slowdown on the freeway . . . and we stopped for lunch at a very nice place outside San Antonio and had a wonderful meal and talked and talked and talked without looking at the time . . . and after leaving the restaurant, we realized that we might barely have an hour for the museum.
So we turned around and came all the way back, and decided that since I wasn't completely happy with the current Dork Tower version anyway, we'd just try the whole thing again tomorrow. But tomorrow we're going to start at 11.

Car Wars fans, take note: a seller on eBay is offering a 1986 Trans Am done up by California custom car king George Barris for a never-aired 1986 television show called Force III.
The premise of Force III had three government agents fighting the forces of evil behind the wheels of their custom combat vehicles. The Trans Am belonged to the character known as "the Wizard," and comes with (non-functional) machine guns, rockets, and a trunk-mounted Vulcan, among other things.

More Mars news -- Latest readings from the Mars Global Surveyor came up negative for large deposits of carbonates (like limestone), the tell-tale rock left behind after large seas and oceans recede. “This really points to a cold, frozen, icy Mars that has probably always been that way, as opposed to a warm, humid, ocean Mars sometime in the past,” Arizona St. researcher Philip Christensen said.

Zendo is a game of logic in which the Master creates a rule and students attempt to discover it by building and studying configurations of pyramids.
Frustrated Austrian highway authorities, unable to reduce the accident rate on a particular stretch of autobahn any other way, have turned to local druids to erect stone monoliths to re-establish the natural flow of "earth energy" and bring the area back into spiritual harmony.

Ogre Mk. VI
The biggest war machine created by the Combine was the culmination of the Ogre line, the Ogre Mk. VI. This behemoth is 3 5/8 inches long and 1 7/8 inches wide. The chassis stands 15/16 of an inch tall (the tower adds an additional inch). It adds 250 points to your army.
The Mk. VI was designed to be a terror to all who encountered it -- infantry, armor, and even other cybertanks. It was never produced in large numbers, and the designers suspected that they had reached the point of diminishing returns in terms of the optimum number of weapons to load onto any one platform. Nevertheless, it performed admirably whenever it was involved in a battle.

Combine Radar
Radars are used for both communication and detection. Normally, a radar structure is merely a target in a scenario, but it can also function as an optional army enhancer. Buildings in Ogre do not generally have point costs, except as determined by the scenario.

Otterman Infantry Officer
Officers in the Ottermen Empire are highly trained in the finer points of tactics and warfare. Many spend hundreds of hours honing their skill with boardgames designed to simulate battles. On the field of combat, they stay on the move, directing their troops from the midst of the fray. Their chain armor and swords keep them nimble and combat-effective.
Off The Wall Armies is a new collection of old figures, improbable and hilarious. Sculpted in 28mm scale, each set features anthropomorphic animal figures - sometimes known as "furries" - with weapons and gear from different historical periods. They’re great as the foundation of a "furry" campaign, as high-tech bioroids, or just as weird new encounters for adventurers from any time or place.

Otterman Infantry Bowman
Archery is held in high regard in the Ottermen Empire, a fact this warrior takes pride in. In training or friendly battles, he uses blunt arrows and targets the body for non-lethal hits. In serious combat, he often aims for unarmored limbs, and is capable of making trick shots.

While the stereotype of an Otter is quick and lithe, this race does produce its share of bruisers. The Heavy Infantryman is one such fighter, covering his body with heavy scales and swinging a vicious war axe.

Otterman Light Cavalry Bowman
While the standard archer is an effective warrior on his own, when the bowman is mounted, his mobility threatens even more targets. Not only does the bizarre saddle keeps the rider steady when the giant maned weasel-mouse is stationary, but it makes firing during a charge possible.

Otterman Heavy Cavalry
For heavy-hitting fast strikes, the Ottermen have the Heavy Cavalry. Although the extra layers of armor slow the weasel-mouse down, their "poinging" gait allows the Heavy Cavalry to wade into the thickest battle. The Heavy Cavalry rely on maces and the sheer mass of their armored mounts to break through an enemy's defensive line.

Is it a coincidence there've been so many Mars stories lately? Hardly. We can't take credit for this excellent explanation, picked up on the net and sent to us by reader Richard Guy, but we're glad to share it:
"Never again in your lifetime will the Red Planet be so spectacular! This month and next month the Earth is catching up with Mars, an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close
to Earth in the last 5,000 years but it may be as long as 60,000 years.
"The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within
34,649,589 miles and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in
the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11
arc seconds wide. At a modest 75 power magnification Mars will look as
large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At
the beginning of August, Mars will rise in the east at 10 p.m. and
reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.
"By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at
nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 a.m. That's
pretty convenient when it comes to seeing something that no human has
seen in recorded history. So mark your calendar at the beginning of
August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout
the month."

Warehouse 23 News: Traveller From The Past
At the back of a secret storeroom in an unknown building, a stash of GameLords Traveller supplements was found. A bit timeworm, but complete, intact, and fully compatible with Classic Traveller.
I am lobbying SJ to open a Seattle office for the summer. Stepping off the plane in Austin was deucedly unpleasant after having spent nearly a week in temperate climes.
The convention itself was a lot of fun. I had not been before, but hope to go back and play some more games; the games I did play, however, were very cool indeed. You may be seeing some of them pop up in Warehouse 23 over the next months . . .
Brian Underhill, author of GURPS Cliffhangers and GURPS WWII: Return to Honor, ran several games to preview his upcoming book, GURPS SWAT. By all accounts, the games were well received (and at least one player from the first two sessions made a point of returning for the pickup game on Sunday, always a good sign). There were many other SJ Games events, including a Munchkin Fu tournament, a truly insane game of Chez Geek/Slack Attack/Block Party/Chez Greek/Chez Grunt on Friday night, occasional games of X-Bugs, and a "blender" Munchkin game which drew a LOT of interest. I, personally, got to play Diceland: Ogre (from Cheapass Games) with the indefatigable James Ernest, and am proud to say that under my control, the Ogre Mk III rolled to victory over the hapless foes. I then retired from play, undefeated.
Thanks to everyone who made my week in Seattle a special experience, with extra thanks to Brian Underhill, for being a WONDERFUL author and a great tour guide, and Devin and Stephanie Ganger, for being the best hosts I could possibly have asked for.

The World Science Fiction Convention - in Toronto this year - had been in my travel plans, and now it's not. Foo. There's no one reason . . . it's just that travel in general is getting less pleasant and less convenient, and there's a lot to do here (including some work I will really ENJOY, like getting the next Munchkin project ready for playtest). Somewhere along the way, I realized that "I get to go to Worldcon!" had become "Aww, do I hafta take time off for Worldcon?"
That's a question that answers itself.
I will miss seeing my friends there. In particular, I wanted to rejoice with Stefan Jones and David Brin over the release of the second edition of GURPS Uplift, and I wanted to spend some time with Greg Hyland yakking about Munchkin Fu and Ninja Burger (we met briefly at Origins but didn't get the chance to talk at ALL). And, well, Worldcon is always neat, and I wanted to go . . . but I realize that this year I'm just not up for it.
This means that there are two memberships for sale. $125 each (they'll cost you $205 at the door), first come, first served. Drop me a line.

If you're coming to the con, find me and say howdy! (I know Brian and I are giving a presentation Saturday afternoon, and I'll probably be hanging around the game rooms or the dealers' room a lot of the rest of the time. I'll try to make sure the MIBs always know where I am.)

NASA has selected the machine they're going to send to Mars in 2007 as the first in their Mars Scout series -- a lander with a robot arm that will dig for water and analyze soil samples for signs of life. The lander, called the Phoenix Project, will be designed and built at the University of Arizona -- the very proud Tucson Citizen has the story.
Also of interest is one of the losing proposals, a Virginia-built rocket-powered airplane that would have been the first plane to fly on another planet. The Houston Chronicle has the story.

August 9, 2003: End Of An Era: Miniatures Shutdown
At the end of this month, SJ Games will close down its miniatures operation. During that time, we plan to cast enough metal to allow for expected sales through the end of 2003; after that, the lines will probably go out of print.
I say “probably,” because we would certainly discuss licensing the figures to another company. We will welcome inquiries. (Or if somebody out there has been wanting to set up a small casting operation near Austin, that could be very interesting!)
The reason for the shutdown is simple: the division has been, ever since it was set up, the least profitable of our endeavors. Costs are high, and while some miniatures sets have been modest hits . . . overall, we would be far better off if we put the time, space, thought, and money into our other projects. It really seems that metal casting should be left either to companies which concentrate on that one thing, or which are big enough to create a minis division that is essentially its own independent operation.
I’m personally very proud of the work that we did here. It’s been a great privilege to have Richard Kerr as a sculptor, and the whole team, headed by Paul Chapman, has worked hard to release some really quality stuff. But it’s time to call it quits. Our thanks to those of you who have supported us by buying our figures and telling us you liked them. Ah, if only there had been more of you!

Plus, it gives us an excuse to remind you that all this is already covered in GURPS Mars and Transhuman Space: In The Well, making us wonder why NASA doesn't just pick up a couple of copies and save themselves the $2 million. But that's just us.

August 3, 2003: No Newspaper Is Good Newspaper
Last week I reached the point of complete apathy about our local paper, the Austin American-Statesman. The editorial policy is (by Texas standards) kneejerk liberal, and spills blatantly into local news coverage. The humor column usually reads like a drunk trying to pick a fight. City politics here in the People's Republic of Austin are depressing to read about even when reported evenhandedly. And the letters page leaves only two conclusions: either Austin is chock-full of drooling idiots, or somebody at the Statesman has decided that if a letter doesn't make the reader roll his eyes, it's not amusing enough to print.
I realized that, although I spent 20 to 30 minutes with the paper each day, and more on Sunday, I was skimming the whole thing and getting little or nothing. I can read Dave Barry online; if I decide I miss any of the comics enough to care, I can read them online. When I need national or world news I can juggle the online CNN, Fox, and the BBC, and get close enough to the truth to make it through my life.
So I canceled my subscription, saved a few trees, and got a half-hour a day back into my life.
