May 31, 2003: The End Of D20 Weekly

The current (May 28, 2003) issue of d20 Weekly will be the last. We're glad we tried it, and we published quite a few articles that we're very proud of, but in the end it just didn't find its audience. We'll put the effort, and the money it was losing, into other projects.

Current d20 Weekly subscribers will have three options:

  • A rollover of their subscription to Pyramid, our original online game zine. (If you are already a Pyramid subscriber, this will just add to your subscription.) The 583 articles in the d20 Weekly archive will be combined with the Pyramid archives, so those who take this option will still have archive access (plus, of course, access to the 3,400+ articles in the Pyramid archives). Pyramid will also have its budget increased to cover one extra article a week specifically about d20. Half of these will be a biweekly column from Owen K.C. Stephens, one of d20 Weekly’s most popular contributors. And yes, we will continue to host playtest for any d20 publishers who wish!
  • Or subscribers can roll their subscription over to the Journal of the Travellers' Aid Society instead. We figure somebody will ask about this option, so we're including it.
  • Or a pro-rata refund, by check, for all issues remaining on their subscriptions.

For questions about this announcement, please contact Andrew Hackard, Managing Editor, at andrew@sjgames.com.

To Dale Donovan and Steve Miller, who worked hard as d20 Weekly editors; to Pyramid editor Steven Marsh, who put in effort far beyond the call of duty to help the "little brother" zine get off the ground; and to everyone who contributed material to d20 Weekly . . . thank you. It was a good zine, and the archives will stay online.

And to all of our d20 Weekly subscribers: thanks for your support. We appreciate it; we appreciate YOU. We hope you'll stick around and read Pyramid, both for d20 material and for coverage of the whole game hobby. But if not . . . well, thank you for giving us a chance!

May 28, 2003: Now Shipping!

Memorial Day has come and gone, and summer has officially begun in the good ol' US of A. All the system's features are supported, with complete vehicle creation rules from GURPS Vehicles, as well as GURPS Vehicles Expansion 1 and GURPS Vehicles Expansion 2.

Lots of extras, including a die roller, round out this package.

GURPS Psionics (Reprint)

GURPS Age of Napoleon
Once in a great while, one man defines the time in which he lives. One such man was Napoleon Bonaparte, and his ambition shaped the face of a continent. From humble beginnings in Corsica to ignominious defeat in Russia and at Waterloo, Napoleon was the sun around which Europe revolved.

GURPS brings the age of Napoleon to life. It focuses on 18th- and 19th-century Europe, including the beginning of the end of colonialism. Here's a wealth of roleplaying information about commoners, soldiers, nobles, spies, privateers . . . and revolutionaries. Filled with the superb research which roleplayers expect from a GURPS historical supplement, GURPS Age of Napoleon breathes life into bloody battlefields . . . and the equally bloody political intrigue of Napoleon's Europe.

128 pages. Stock #6539, ISBN 1-55634-451-1. $22.95.

Astronomers have discovered a new red dwarf a little less than 8 light-years from Earth . . . making it the third-closest star (after the Alpha Centauri system and Barnard's Star) to our own.

Why didn't we know about a star that close before now? Read the Space.com story for one theory, although of course we blame the Illuminati. And start rewriting all those "20 Stars Closest to Sol" tables . . .

May 24, 2003: Cosmic Encounter Online

Is this cool, or what? I've always liked Cosmic Encounter, and there's a new online version. Verrrrry pretty.

Even cooler: you can play a limited version of the game for free, to try it out.

Coolest of all: us Mac-heads aren't left out. It is written in Flash, and runs fine in IE (ugh) under OSX (yea!). In fact, the folks at Apple gave it a droolingly glowing review which is fun to read.

May 22, 2003: Macrotures!

At last . . . finally . . . our giant-scale (1/60) Paneuropean GEV "macrotures" are ready to ship. Check out the Macrotures page for lots of photos.

These are hybrid castings; the body is resin, but the detail parts are metal. We plan to do more Ogre Macrotures. The more of you that like this one and buy it, the sooner the next vehicle will be out. How's THAT for a subtle hint?

The main use for the first few will be as display pieces, but when we get enough of them done . . . can you say GIANT MINIATURES GAME?

The guys at Sci-Fi Supply have a home-built set of giant Ogre minis, and their games are fantastic. Eventually, you'll be able to do the same. (And you know something? 1/60 minis are MUCH easier to paint . . .)

We're selling these for $20, which seemed to us to be a fair price but doesn't leave enough profit to go through distributors and stores. So they're a Warehouse 23 exclusive.

May 21, 2003: Warehouse 23 Becomes Official Online Sales HQ For Dork Storm Press

Warehouse 23 has announced an agreement with Dork Storm Press that makes Warehouse 23 their official online sales headquarters.

"I'm thrilled to have all the great Dork Storm comics in Warehouse 23," manager Michelle Barrett said. The current Dork Storm lineup includes Nodwick and PS 238 by Aaron Williams, Snapdragons by John Kovalic and Liz Rathke, and the Origins award-winning Dork Tower by Kovalic. Warehouse 23 will also carry the trade paperback compilations of the comics, and whatever else Dork Storm comes up with in the future.

Dork Tower is a gaming phenomenon today, and Kovalic and SJ Games go back a long way . . . Pyramid was one of the first publications to run Dork Tower, and Kovalic's illustrations for Munchkin and Chez Geek contributed to those games' success. Aaron Williams' Nodwick has been a mainstay in Dragon Magazine for years, and his new PS 238 is a runaway hit. "I'm enormously happy with this agreement," said Kovalic. "This being Steve Jackson Games, I feel like we're keeping this all in the family." Dork Storm joins Atlas Games, Issaries, and Citizen Games as companies that use Warehouse 23 as their online sales site.

May 20, 2003: But Does This Exploit The Monkeys?

Everybody talks about large amounts of monkeys, and large amounts of time, and the complete works of Shakespeare. Very occasionally, someone actually puts a monkey in front of a keyboard . . . but we have not yet gotten so much as "To be or not to QEWRIQER#$%@$%" out of the hairy litttle shirkers. Clearly we need more monkeys, or more typewriters, or more money. Yes! More money!

Indeed, progress marches on, and the Arts Council of England, bless their little hearts, has financed a milestone of sorts: the first politically correct monkey-Shakespeare experiment. Not only can you read some very advanced thinking about the meaning of monkeys and who REALLY wrote the plays (they don't take seriously the idea that it was a guy named Shakespeare) . . . but you can send them YOUR money and get your very own copy of the simian scribbles, on your choice of media. And if you do send them money, what do you think they'll spend THAT on?

May 19, 2003: One Step Closer To Transhuman Space

Having recently spent a good deal of time on the Transhuman Space supplements Transhuman Space: Deep Beyond (now available!) and Transhuman Space: High Frontier (coming soon), I've taken a lot of interest in the tiny steps we're taking today to get closer to the plausible, yet fantastic future of the 22nd century.

According to this New Scientist article, the first probe specifically designed to explore an asteroid just launched. If all goes according to plan, the Japanese satellite Muses-C will return in 2007 from asteroid 1998 SF 36 with a host of data, including samples.

May 18, 2003: Dancing Barefoot

I just finished reading a book. I hadn't intended to read the whole thing tonight . . . actually, I just wanted to make sure the PDF was good, and see how long it was, so I could decide where "Read Wil's Book" would go on The List. But when I opened the PDF . . . well, why not read a bit?

So I read a few pages, and it was a good story. Sad, but good. It was real. And I knew how he felt, not because I've had that experience . . . no doubt I will someday, but I haven't yet . . . but because this guy is a good storyteller.

So I read the next one. And the next one (which is about when he was 15, and has the Car Wars Deluxe Edition in it). And the next. And then I was in the last story, which is the long one about a SF convention. And there was no way I was going to quit reading at that point.

And then I was done. And you know something? When I started reading, I was pretty used up. It had been a long day, and not a good one. But when I finished, I felt better. (OK, I'm a geek, I'll say it: I got some hit points back.) Because this is a real guy, with a real life, and he tells good stories.

If you read wilwheaton.net, you know what I'm talking about. For the rest of you: Wil Wheaton . . . who long ago, as a kid, played a kid named Wesley on TV . . . is still acting, but he's also writing. A lot of people read his blog at wilwheaton.net. He's also written two books: the autobiographical Just A Geek, which will be out soon, and Dancing Barefoot, which is the one that made my day. It's out now. You can get it from his publishing site, Monolith Press. This is me saying you should read it. There are a lot of bad books out there. This is a good one.

May 5, 2003: Hi!

The latest minions of the office have arrived, escaping the somewhat scenic vistas of Lawrence, Kansas, for Austin, Texas . . .

Kim Bernard is an editorial assistant, writing, editing, or screaming at text as Andrew requires. A life-long gamer, she didn't discover SJ Games or GURPS until meeting her husband in '97. Outside of gaming, her interests include computer games, weird stuffed animals, Japanese cooking, and 17th-century British literature. She is VERY happy to be here rather than working as a technical writer at a mundane computer company. She looks forward to lots and lots of books in her future, both those she has to edit and those she gets to read for fun.

Kayn Bernard is a production assistant, working on layout, artwork, and other related materials. He, too, is a life-long gamer, who met his wife at a gaming club meeting at the University of Kansas. He is a rabid GURPS player. His other hobbies include card games, computer games, giving his wife trouble, and fencing. He is thrilled to have an interesting job, with the added benefit of being able to work in the same office as his wife.

May 2, 2003: We Don't Need No Stinkin' . . .

Oh, come on. You knew we were going to say it . . .

[Highlander Badger Piper] After an absence of almost 20 years, Highlander Badgers have returned, kicking off the re-release of the Off The Wall Armies line of bizarre fantasy miniatures. Sculpted in 28mm scale, each army features anthropomorphic animal figures with weapons and gear from different historical periods. These figures are the delightfully strange creations of Richard Kerr, who sculpted all the figures and developed the bizarre universe they come from.

The Highlander Badgers are based on the North American badger (Taxidea taxus), with a culture from the 16th- thru 18th-century Scottish Highlands. Currently available are the Sergeant, the Longbowman, the Humbly (Commoner) with Axe, the Bagpiper, and the Chieftain. Future releases for this group will include the Highlander Cavalry and claymore-wielding warriors.

The Highlander Badgers are brought to you by Gray Cat Studios and Steve Jackson Games, and are available exclusively through Warehouse 23.

The entire Off The Wall Armies line will eventually be available again, and Kerr is busy sculpting another generation of great new figures. Armies will be released approximately every other month. The Otterman Empire is due out next, followed by the Semi-Colonials, Something Fishy, the Snakes of Wrath, and Kat-anas.

Target: Iraq
How did the U.S. take Saddam down? Could we have done it sooner? And what could have gone wrong?

The "new" Iraq conflict wasn't new. It started in 1990, and "slow war" continued, in the skies over Iraq and in the U.N., for 12 years.

Target: Iraq explores both the "slow war" and "fast war" against Iraq. A political game covers the 12 years of Saddam's recovery and buildup after the first Gulf War. It sets the stage for the coalition attack in April, played out as a fast-moving wargame.

Target: Iraq was created by Austin Bay. His Arabian Nightmare, a simulation of the first Gulf War published by 3W in 1990 and updated in 1991, is still used as a war-college training tool.

With full-color map, die-cut full-color counters, and detailed rules, Target: Iraq is a classic military simulation game taken straight from today's headlines.

Boxed game with full-color map and full-color die-cut counters. Stock #1900, ISBN 1-55634-711-1. $24.95.

GURPS Ultra-Tech 2/er (Reprint)

Welcome to the Future!

GURPS Ultra-Tech is a sourcebook for science-fiction technology, from the 21st century to the farthest reaches of the future. From the vacuum of interstellar space to the murderous intrigue of the court of the Galactic Empire, to the lowest dives of the asteroids, an adventurer is no better than his gear. GURPS Ultra-Tech, Second Edition Revised has been reorganized for ease of use -- equipment is now sorted by type, not by Tech Level.

128 pages. Stock #6032, ISBN 1-55634-315-9. $22.95.

Transhuman Space: Under Pressure
As humanity reaches to the planets, a last frontier remains on Earth . . . the oceans. Governments, corporations, political idealists, and outlaws are staking their claims in this realm. There are oceans on other worlds too: Europa, Mars, Titan -- all unique and full of possibilities.

Transhuman Space: Under Pressure describes the oceans of the 22nd century, from the teeming seas of Earth to the icy ocean of Europa. Ocean arcologies . . . mining operations and terrorist foes . . . adventure and intrigue in an environment far more hostile than mere space.

This book also includes new character templates -- including new parahumans, bioroids, cybershells, and uplifted animals designed for aquatic existence -- and modular design rules for aquatic vehicles, compatible with the system in Transhuman Space: In The Well.

160 pages. Stock #6709, ISBN 1-55634-678-6. $26.95.

GURPS WWII: Blitzkrieg
In the spring of 1940, German forces swept through Holland and Luxembourg and set their sights on France. The French forces made their stand at the Maginot Line, confident that the Germans could not attack through the Ardenne Forest. It was a fatal miscalculation that nearly cost the Allies the war.

GURPS WWII: Blitzkrieg covers the invasion of France, with a special emphasis on the GURPS WWII roleplaying opportunities this crucial episode provides. From the initial attacks on the bridges and fortresses, through the evacuation of British forces at Dunkirk and the beginnings of the French Resistance, GURPS WWII: Blitzkrieg is modeled more along the lines of an adventure module. New rules are kept to a minimum, while the actual history presentation is sprinkled with references to game play.

Bring a dark chapter of history to life . . . if you can withstand the Blitzkrieg.

48 pages. Stock #8006, ISBN 1-55634-637-9. $11.95.

Transhuman Space Miniatures
It's the year 2100. Humans have colonized the solar system. China and America struggle for control of Mars. The Royal Navy patrols the asteroid belt. Nanotechnology has transformed life on Earth forever, and gene-enhanced humans share the world with artificial intelligences and robotic cybershells. Our solar system has become a setting as exciting and alien as any interstellar empire. Transhuman Space is cutting-edge science fiction adventure that begins where cyberpunk ends.

And now, Richard Kerr has created the first set of miniatures for this exciting roleplaying line! Transhuman Space Miniatures has six gorgeous figures, including Felicia, Tennin, and Aquamorph parahumans, an uplifted Post-Canine, and more. They're perfect for Transhuman Space gaming, of course, but the figures also go with other science-fiction, superhero, and modern-day games.

Add the third dimension to Transhuman Space – with Transhuman Space Miniatures.

6 miniatures in video box packaging. Stock #13-0300, ISBN 1-55634-701-4. $24.95.
