April 29, 2003: Now Shipping

It's nearly May Day, time for the workers of the world to unite, to cast off their chains of oppression, and to run out and buy these fine new gaming products, currently shipping to local game stores everywhere:

Munchkin Monster Manual
It's all about the thrill of combat . . . meeting worthy foes and murdering them by surprise . . . gleefully slaughtering their low-level minions . . . defiling the corpses . . . and, of course, TAKING THEIR STUFF.

The Munchkin d20 Monster Manual contains dozens of foes for you and your comrades to slay, from the dreaded Gazebo and the surprisingly tough Potted Plant to the secretive Grassy Gnoll . . . and the really quite nasty Plutonium Dragon! Chock-full of great John Kovalic art, this book also includes creatures from the Unnatural Axe set, as well as lots of new and equally demented creations -- all detailed for use in Munchkin d20 games!

48 pages, hardcover. Stock #3403, ISBN 1-55634-669-7. $14.95.

GURPS WWII: Grim Legions
Join the brave, proud, and doomed men carrying Mussolini's "8 million bayonets" into battle in GURPS WWII: Grim Legions, a sourcebook on the Italian armed forces.

This 48-page book includes a summary of the war as seen, and endured, through Italian eyes; descriptions of Italian military organization and tactics with a roster of Italian land, naval, and air units during the war; distinctly Italian character concepts, including the elite and cutting-edge underwater commandos; Italian small arms and fighting vehicles from the reliable Beretta to their hopelessly outdated armor; campaign seeds and suggestions, and much more!

Written by Italian WWII enthusiast Michele Armellini, this small book provides a wealth of detail about Italy's supremely competent, but little respected military rarely found in English-language references. Rally under the banner of Il Duce and explore the quixotic Italian war today!

48 pages. Stock #8010, ISBN 1-55634-641-7. $11.95.

Special Ops Miniatures
Knock, knock . . .

The six figures in this set, sculpted by Richard Kerr, represent the real-life entry teams of today's modern army and police forces. You get a Command figure, plus Shooter, Entry, Breach, Rearguard, and a kneeling Sniper, a figure that's almost impossible to find!

These 28mm figures are perfect for modern-day gaming, from gritty urban warfare to anti-terrorism actions, espionage, and even superheroes. When these boys knock, you better answer the door . . .

Six 28mm miniatures in a video box. Stock #13-0000, ISBN 1-55634-710-3. $24.95.

ReMemory: The Art of Bill Koeb
"In these pages you will find the many facets of Bill’s personality and skill - from his initial, sometimes cryptic sketches, to more polished thoughts and full-blown paintings. It’s enjoyable to watch the work progress, to see his thinking process from sketch to finish. What’s more, you’ll discover someone who is thrilled to be painting and drawing, for whom the very act is second nature." -- George Pratt, from the introduction to the book Bill Koeb pushes the limits of mixed media fantasy and surreal artwork. His work spans a variety of styles and media, from covers for DC and White Wolf, to the paintings for the film "The Crow, City of Angels," to editorial illustrations and sequential art. But always there is a common thread: the search for truth and beauty.

Hardcover, 64 full-color pages. Stock #60-1011, ISBN 1-55634-631-X. $26.95.

April 28, 2003: Art Direction

We have gone through an interesting time recently with art direction, or the lack of same. Details NOT available on request . . . sigh. Phil Reed, who thought that he had moved on to another project, kept getting called back to put out fires . . .

What we've decided to do is, perhaps, what we should have done months ago . . . used the skills we have had in-house. Loren Wiseman has done the art direction job for us before. He's doing it again. Welcome back to the art office, Loren.

Warehouse 23 News: Starships And Alligators

Mag Blast is a fast and furious card game of interstellar war, while Green Alligators is a sedate, non-competitive descriptive word game.

April 27, 2003: Games For Our Troops

A couple of weeks ago we sent 5,000 games to our troops deployed in Iraq and Kuwait with Operation Enduring Freedom. The "care package" had 20 of our most popular titles, including Car Wars, Chez Greek, X-Bugs, and -- of course! -- a lot of copies of the new Chez Grunt.

We’ve always had a lot of fans in the armed forces, and we hope that when they get a little downtime from their mission, this will help them relax and feel a bit closer to home. These are all board and card games, each one complete in itself; we're thinking that will be more practical than RPGs.

The games were donated through the U.S. Army Community and Family Support Center (CFSC) in Kuwait. The CFSC provides oversight for Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) operations worldwide. Loren Wiseman gets our thanks for rounding up the information and making the contact.

The person we worked with is Ms. Sherry Murphy, at sherry.murphy@kuwait.army.mil. If you're a game publisher . . . or, for that matter, a book publisher . . . think about sending something to our folks. They'll be there for a while; they're there for us; show them some support.

April 22, 2003: Well, If You Consider Lying Like A Weasel To Be An "Action" . . .

The folks at Herobuilders.com, makers of custom action figures, have a new line of Operation Iraqi Freedom characters. My favorite is Iraqi Information Minister, Mohammed Saeed al Sahhaf. He comes in a "Dumb" and "Dumber" version; the "Dumber" version talks.

OK, perhaps it's in bad taste to make fun of the vanquished, but at least it has a long history. And they also do action figures of President Bush, Tony Blair, and Rudy Giuliani. Check out their website for the complete line, including Osama bin Laden in drag -- no, really -- for the whole story.

April 17, 2003: Thanks, Pen & Paper!

The RPG website Pen & Paper put on their own awards this year, and the results are in.

Unlike other awards where voters pick from a list of nominees, the Pen & Paper awards were entirely open-ended -- voters wrote in their own favorites in a number of categories. So while winning is nice, getting a runner-up mention is still quite an honor. And a number of Steve Jackson Games products (and people!) were so honored:

  • GURPS Cliffhangers, Runner-Up, Best Supplement
  • Hellboy RPG, Runner-Up, Best Licensed Product
  • Andrew Hackard, Runner-Up, Fan Favorite Editor
  • Pyramid, Runner-Up, Fan Favorite Magazine/Webzine
  • GURPS, Runner-Up, RPG Hall of Fame
  • Steve Jackson, Runner-Up, Creators Hall of Fame

April 15, 2003: From Ad Astra Games

A note from Ken Burnside at Ad Astra Games:

While clearing through the back inventory of Sierra Madre Games for their merger with Ad Astra Games, we stumbled across a small inventory of Rocket Flight, no more than 50 copies. We've already contacted the dozen or so people who missed out on the last Daily Illuminator mention of this...

As before, for every copy we sell, while we have them in inventory, we'll donate $2 to the Space Access Society as part of the Columbia Memorial fund.

As I said in the original message, I can think of no better testament to the will of those who dare to get us, the collective "us" of humanity, a step further up and out, than to teach the children who follow in their footsteps that the futures we paint with our games are things that we can achieve, if we're willing to go there.

Rocket Flight is still the single best modeling tool for realistic spaceship movement in the solar system. Fans of Transhuman Space in need of a planetary trip calculator are strongly urged to check it out, as is anyone who wants to see how elegant orbital mechanics can be when presented in terms a 10-year-old can understand. April 14, 2003: Now With 35% More Illumination!

I mentioned a little while back that we would eventually be moving our mailing lists back to our own server. The first one is going to be the Daily Illuminator.

We have decided not to just copy the list of subscribers over from the current Daily Illuminator mailing list (hosted by Yahoo Groups), partly because of security reasons, and partly because we don't want to just sign people up to a new list without their consent. So if you're on the mailing list and you want to keep receiving the Daily Illuminator by mail, then you need to go to http://www.sjgames.com/mailman/listinfo/illuminator and sign up to the new list. If you run into problems, drop me a line at webmaster@sjgames.com.

The new list will have no activity until the old list is removed, so you can be signed up to both lists and not worry about getting two copies of every Illuminator. In about a week we will start sending to the new list and remove the old one entirely.

April 13, 2003: Now Shipping!

As the warming breezes of spring merrily tickle the bluebonnets here in the paradise that is Central Texas, the following fine products are on their way to distributors everywhere and should be on your local game store shelves in the very near future:

GURPS Reign of Steel (Reprint)
It is 2046 A.D. The robot revolt is over, and the machines have won.

Ruthless Artificial Intelligences have exterminated most of humanity, while the survivors are hunted like animals, or face slow death in the robots' brutal labor camps. But a lucky few have escaped death or enslavement. While most of mankind has succumbed to despair, some refuse to give up hope. Around the world small groups of dedicated survivors are forming, preparing to oppose the robot overlords and fight to free mankind.

A worldbook for GURPS, Reign of Steel details mankind's struggle against his metal masters in a dark future. GURPS Reign of Steel utilizes the sleek rules from GURPS Robots, although you do not need Robots to play. Take on the role of the oppressed masses, and teach the robot overlords that technology can be made obsolete.

128 pages. Stock #6079, ISBN 1-55634-330-2. $22.95.

  • New character types, vehicles and technologies.

They were the dogfaces.

GURPS WWII: Dogfaces is the definitive roleplaying sourcebook for U.S. ground forces in World War II. Storming the beaches of Normandy, outdueling German tanks in the Ardennes, or retaking the Pacific island by island . . . the infantry, armor, and artillerymen of the U.S. Army and Marines were the backbone of the Allied war effort. With the attention to detail and historical accuracy that GURPS is known for, GURPS WWII: Dogfaces gives you everything you need to save the world from the Axis.

128 pages. Stock #8005, ISBN 1-55634-636-0. $22.95.

And I'll be running a big Ogre Miniatures game Friday, and Andrew Hackard and I will give a talk Sunday morning. I'll do a sneak preview of at least one upcoming game that afternoon. Richard Garriott is the other guest of Honor, and he's speaking on Sunday too.

They have a very complete website -- check it out, and if you've got the weekend free, come see us!

April 10, 2003: Shrinkwrapper!

A couple of months ago our shrinkwrapper died for the last time. I shall not burden you with the story . . . with any of the stories . . . of the living hell that we went through to get the replacement delivered or properly installed, or the Sisyphean efforts of the guys down in Traffic to feed the insatiable maw of worldwide Munchkin fandom with only the small shrinkwrap system kindly loaned by Phil Reed.

But it wasn't pretty.

However, it is, finally, working, and THAT is very pretty indeed. It's highly automated. You put boxes in one side, and they move quickly through, and the bar comes down by itself and the boxes come out the other side. Much faster and more efficient. Here's John Northrup feeding it stacks of Munchkin.

Warehouse 23 News: Pretty Dice

Warehouse 23 now carries Chessex Translucent Dice in Polyhedral 7-Die Set and Dice Blocks of 12d6

April 8, 2003: For Great Justice

All Your Iraq Are Belong To U.S. . . . The original "All Your Base" soundtrack (which, for trivia fans, is actually named "Invasion of the Gabber Robots," and was done by the Laziest Men on Mars) . . . with a new video track.

It starts off funny, but the overall mood is nothing like the original. Lots of excellent photos. It's interesting how a change in context has turned a dance mix into a high-tech battle anthem! This is something that the troops themselves will enjoy -- let's hope there are enough wide Internet pipes to the Middle East that it gets there soon.

On the other hand, if your reaction to the war has been to go lie down in a street somewhere, this will just make you grumpier. I predict it will not make the top 40 in Paris and Moscow, but it got a grin out of me . . .
-- Steve Jackson

April 7, 2003: Munchkin Fu!

We playtested Munchkin Fu for the first time on Saturday afternoon. It went well. I didn't win, but I got to set up SUCH an abusive card combo that actual winning hardly mattered . . .

As you might gather, this game is a Munchkin variant that sends the players into a Hong Kong action movie, with random bits of anime and Japanese monster flicks. The players become ninja, samurai, yakuza, and monks. Instead of races, they have martial arts Styles . . . there are 12 different, unique Style cards, plus modifiers. It's a stand-alone game, but CAN be combined with Munchkin.

This will be the first Munchkin game not illustrated by John Kovalic. He's just got too much on his plate. So . . . we have recruited Greg "Lethargic Lad" Hyland for this one. As you see from the cover art here, Greg has the Munchkin nature. We like what we've seen from him, and you will, too.

Some people have asked if Munchkin Fu has replaced Munchkin 3: Clerical Errors on the schedule. No . . . both of them are coming, but Munchkin Fu will appear first; it's scheduled for a July ship. We leaked the word about Clerical Errors sooner because the cards were all written and I wanted to demo it at Ubercon, but all we have decided about its release date is "Fall sometime, probably."

A frequently asked question at GAMA was "Will there be a supplement for Star Munchkin?" The answer is . . . it's not scheduled or written, but if the fans are interested, I'm game to write it. And John Kovalic has already said he will FIND time to draw the cards!

April 4, 2003: And Yes, Some Of It Involves Steam

Illuminated Site of the Week: Ah, for the good old days when innovation required nothing more than a willing spirit and American can-do. And a length of pipe. And a steam engine. And a few miles of copper wire. And...well, the other stuff at The Musuem of RetroTechnology.

April 3, 2003: An Irregular Webcomic

Titled (don't you love truth in advertising?) Irregular Webcomic. It's created by David Morgan-Mar. Now, I admit that I'm biased . . . it's got Lego, dinosaurs, and GURPS books in it, so I must be pretty near the bullseye of the target demographic. But it does get the occasional snicker out of me; check it out!

July Releases

Steve Jackson Games announces the following products for July 2003 release:

Strange Synergy
Strange Synergy is built around 100 different Power Cards . . . superpowers, mutations, skills, gadgets. Each warrior starts with three different powers. You choose the combination! Can you create the unbeatable team? Can you win against superior powers?

Developed by Steve Jackson and illustrated by Phil Foglio (Girl Genius, GURPS IOU, XXXenophile), this game will be as much fun to watch as it is to play. No two games are the same. How many ways can you make four different teams of three warriors, out of 100 powers? The mind boggles, and the fun never ends!

Boxed game with 112 cards, rules, warrior stand-ups and bases, game map, counters, and one die. Stock #1360, ISBN 1-55634-707-3. $29.95.

Munchkin Fu
If you loved Munchkin . . . look out. Here they come again.

"I'm a Ninja with the Dragon Claw Katana!"
"I'm a Monk with the Honorable Iron Pipe of Skull-Cracking. Fear my Drunken Monkey Kung Fu!"
"I'm a Yakuza with a gun. Run away!"

The Munchkins are back! Now the game is chop-socky Hong Kong action. The characters are Samurai, Ninja, Yakuza, and Monks. The foes are mooks, demons, and assorted bad guys from all the worst martial arts films you've ever seen. Collect treasures and learn new styles to build up your character's powers. Kill the monsters, take their stuff, and be the first one to 10th level!

Created by Steve Jackson. Munchkin Fu is completely compatible with the original Munchkin (and with Star Munchkin, if you're really nuts).

Boxed game with 168 cards, rules, and die. Stock #1412, ISBN 1-55634-677-8. $24.95.

GURPS Vehicle Builder
GURPS Vehicle Builder is the official vehicle-creation program for GURPS. Like the GURPS Character Builder before it, GURPS Vehicle Builder lets you design, optimize, store, modify, and print out vehicles of all types, from an oxcart to a space station! All the system's features are supported, with complete vehicle creation rules from GURPS Vehicles, as well as GURPS Vehicles Expansion 1 and GURPS Vehicles Expansion 2.

Lots of extras, including a die roller, round out this package.

(For Windows only. Sorry, Mac fans.)

CD in DVD case. Stock #5403, ISBN 1-55634-699-9. $24.95.

GURPS Shapeshifters
Shapeshifting . . . changing from one form to another . . . is a classic element of fantastic fiction. It might be caused by magic or by an alien biology . . . or by some wondrous gadget!

Here are complete rules for creating shapeshifter characters in GURPS, gathered and consolidated material from several previous books. Many examples are included, from powerful individuals to whole races of shapeshifters that are the stars (or the villains) of their own campaign settings.

Create shapeshifter heroes, or fight body-switching menaces. From the traditional werewolf to the modern anime "house pet that becomes an ATV," here are rules and creatures that every campaign can use.

128 pages Stock #6533, ISBN 1-55634-452-X. $22.95.

GURPS Traveller: Starships
From launches to liners, from patrol boats to pirates, a starfaring campaign requires ships. GURPS Traveller: Starships details the "View from the Deck" . . . the experience of being aboard a starship. Passengers and pursers, bridge crews and black gang, owners and deckhands . . . they're all here. Charters and salvage operations are included, spiced up with encounters, adventure seeds and a cast of NPC owners, masters and crew.

Starships also features a much more detailed version of the starship design rules in GURPS Traveller (including components for TL7-9, TL11, and TL13 designs). It collects all previously published components in one volume and offers new accessories and design options, as well as descriptions of the technology.

It also includes complete designs for a selection of starships and smaller vessels -- the traders, lab ships, yachts and prospectors likely to be crewed by PCs. Each ship has its own detailed writeup and deck plans. These include:

  • Seeker (Suleiman II class)
  • Yacht (Lady of Shallot class)
  • Safari Ship (Animal class)
  • Old/Low-tech Trader (Birdsong class -- new)

April 1, 2003: GURPS Fourth Edition Announced!

Steve Jackson Games Incorporated is pleased to announce that development of a fourth edition of their popular GURPS game is well under way. The redesign has been spearheaded by long-time GURPS Line Editor Sean "Dr. Kromm" Punch, and by Transhuman Space Line Editor and über-popular GURPS author David Pulver.

"I have no fear about the direction Sean and David have taken the game," said GURPS creator and SJ Games President Steve Jackson. "They have really breathed new life into what was an increasingly creaky game, and I think this edition will revolutionize roleplaying for the next decade or more."

Punch adds, "Our mission statement is that there are no 'sacred cows' in GURPS. We re-examined everything about the game, and while we know that our new direction will be a shock to some fans, we think that once they give it a try, they'll be won over."

"We aren't ready to release full details of the new system yet," Jackson continues, "but I think we can safely let a few tidbits out of the bag. GURPS 4 will feature our new 'clicky-base' character design system, replacing the old point-buy-and-roll-3d6 system that has been holding GURPS back for so long. (Of course, those old rules will still be available as an option if you really want them!) Our miniatures department has been working overtime to produce these figures, and we think we've done it in a way that marries the long-term appeal of GURPS with the current hot miniatures combat system. Future GURPS 4 boosters will include GURPS Supers, Transhuman Stars, GURPS Survivor (by special arrangement with CBS), and of course GURPS Hot Lead. We expect booster sets to start appearing about three months after the core GURPS 4 game hits the market."
